TO RABACAL VIA CALHETA TUNNEL

There is a road ER-211 up from Calheta up to the plateau of Paul da Serra. The road runs throught the forrests of Eucalyptus and may be familiar for people who have already walked the levada nova walk from this road to Prazeres. Quite soon after reaching the elevation of Levada Nova (SEE THE PICTURE OF THE PLACE) you come to the picnic place on the left side of the road. Park your car there and you can see the smaller road on the other side of the road. The road to the tunnel is narrow and later on it goes along steep hillside so you shouldn't go there by car. I did it once and it was quite scary. I wouldn't recommend the experience to anyone.

THE ROAD GOES THROUGHT THE ROCKS

It is only about kilometer or less to the tunnel. The road goes straight first and curves left throught the rocks. After the rocks we come to the hillside section and in no time we already see the building further on. That's the place we are going. As you can see it wouldn't be a good idea to drive along this road. The right side of the road is lined with rockface. On the right very steep hillside continuing deep down to the bottom of this small valley. The road itself is only less than two meters wide.
